However, I'm not sure you're being fair to the author, Helen. The whole quotation is:<br /><br />"In the classroom, digital media also have other major advantages. These media teach students to master the production of knowledge, not just the consumption of knowledge. Kids learn to create videos, write blogs, collaborate online; the also learn to play video games, do digital storytelling, fan fiction, music, graphic art, anime and even more."<br /><br />My son, for example, who turned four at the weekend, is learning (albeit in a nascent form) that just as he can compose images in Daddy's camera, so what he watches on the TV has gone through the same process.<br /><br />There's certainly some procedural knowledge bound up in this thing we call 'literacy', just *how* much is probably open to debate.<br /><br />A final point: what I really appreciated about the sentiment behind the Spotlight article is that discussion about literacies (plural) acknowledges the multiple and varied ways it's possible to view the world.
